13 / 14 Days Pelly River Canoe Tour
 The Pelly River
Intense - that’s probably the best way to describe this tour. The tour is designed for those who want to have a first class outdoor adventure but are restricted by time limitations and would not be able to participate in an extended wilderness outing. Starting near the town of Faro, the tour will end at Pelly Crossing after 300 km and only 70 km before the Pellys confluence with the Yukon. One of the highlights is the negotiation through infamous Granite Canyon. As its full size brother, this tour is THE bear-watching tour! Experience the "Spell of the Yukon" lots of untouched nature, plenty of wildlife, and also places of historical interest. Whitewater difficulties reach class II, but can be avoided in most cases. This tour is suitable for beginners. Necessary skills will be taught before and during each tour. Relatively unknown the Pelly River is a good alternative for the famous Yukon.
Day  Itinerary
01
We'll greet you at the Whitehorse airport and transfer you to the hotel in downtown location. You have time to explore the many sights and go shopping. In the evening you will meet the group and we will discuss the tour routing. Your guide will introduce himself and gives substantial introduction to wilderness rules and canoeing techniques at the beginning and during the tour. You have plenty of time to organize your gear and adapt to the wilderness setting.
02 -11
The canoe tour starts at the Indian village of Ross River. After we arrive at the put-in we unload our gear and carefully repack it in our canoes. A last good-bye to our driver and we will be all to ourselves. With the days go by we penetrate deeper into the vast wilderness. Senses get tuned and you will notice things that would be totally unimportant otherwise. A little crackle lets you anticipate one of the Yukon's magnificent animals step out of the dense forests cover. You will soon feel part of the Yukon's magic and mystery. Given a steady daily pace, we make sure that you will never feel in a hurry. Often we will just drift with the rivers current and watch the game go by at shore or take a sunbath. Part of the common experience is everybody's contribution to the daily camp routines. This and the purposely small number of clients with a maximum of seven in each tour is an ideal basis for a relaxed and unforgettable time. The Pelly is a relatively wide river with good current. Thus, quite often we can stow away the paddles and stretch our legs. However, there is never really a chance to get bored. Every once in awhile, we will encounter sections which require quite a bit of maneuvering, fishermen will get their share of excitement, and old trails invite us for a hike. Three named rapids make for a rise of your heart rate, and so do many short sections of the river which stimulate our appetite with riffles and choppy waters. The main course on the Pelly is offered last: Granite Canyon will give you a final and solid taste of wave bashing and rock dodging. While you are making use of your newly acquired or improved canoeing skills, you will be surrounded by up to 100 metre high cliffs. After ten days of canoeing we have seen most beautiful mountainous country, negotiated through easy whitewater and probably discovered lots of wildlife including moose, black and grizzly bear which are abundant in this area.
12
After a half day of canoeing we reach Pelly Crossing where we get picked up by our driver. On the way to our base we stop at the famous Five-Finger-Rapids and follow the Yukon River to Carmacks - a trading post established in 1890. Via Twin Lakes - well known for their beauty and colors we stop at Conglomerate Mountain which was formed at the leading edge of volcanic mud flows some 185 million years ago. We will take our time for a good photo opportunity at beautiful Fox Lake and drive along Lake Laberge wich became famous from a poem by Robert W. Service. We arrive in Whitehorse where we stay for the night. For guests who have booked the program extension will continue on to Kathleen Lake.
